Assistive Technology
What is Assistive Technology (AT)?
AT is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities and independence of people with disabilities. An AT service directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an AT device.
SAS and OSU offer AT solutions at no cost for students registered to recieve accommodations.
AT and Software Available through SAS and OSU
- Bookshare: Provides electronic version books, including textbooks. Student must complete a “Proof of Disability” form to secure membership. Forms are available from the SAS office and must be verified by SAS staff.
- C-Pen/Exam Pen: Device which reads printed text out loud. Available on campus through University Assessment & Testing
- Dragon Naturally Speaking: Voice-to-text and text-to-voice software. Users can create and save a voice profile that can be used wherever Dragon is downloaded. On-campus software is available at University Assessment & Testing and the Edmon Low Library.
- FM System: Portable personal amplification system including a microphone and receiver. Equipment may be checked out for a semester from SAS.
- FUSION: Combines JAWS screen reading and ZoomText screen magnification softwares.
- Microsoft OneNote: Store notes, insert audio into notes, time stamp, and share notes. Compatible with Mac and Windows. Download to your personal computer from Microsoft.
- Read & Write: Text-to-voice software that can be beneficial when reviewing written work. Features include word prediction, spell and grammar check, and highlighting. Download to your personal computer with the OSU IT Software Distribution Center. On-campus software is available at University Assessment & Testing and the Edmon Low Library.
